Low self-esteem and low self-worth is a common problem many people face in today’s competitive and fast-paced world. Although it can be obvious to others that someone is suffering with low self-esteem, even people you see as successful can be secretly dealing with a nearly disabling lack of confidence. This issue affects people from all walks of life, regardless of how smart or how much potential others see in them. It can delay or even prevent one from realizing their destiny. That “inner critic” keeps them from moving in the direction of their dreams with negative self-talk such as they do not feel “good enough” or “smart enough” or worthy of having the good things in life.

Some Reasons Why People Suffer with Low Self-Esteem or Low Self-Worth

Issues with low self-esteem and low self-worth often have roots in our past. Most people have some sort of an unhappy story they can tell… from experiences such as a difficult or even traumatic childhood to experiences in adulthood that have left them with serious emotional damage. Difficult past experiences can take a toll on your confidence and stifle your ambition to realize your greatest dreams. Those that suffer with low self-esteem and low self-worth issues often think about, relive, and worry about their past experiences are imprisoned and feel powerless to make real and effective changes in their lives.

Changing Self-Talk

One way to begin to make a difference in low self-esteem is to work on changing self-talk. Self-talk is literally just the things you say to yourself about what you are and aren’t able to accomplish in life. Affirmations are positive statements that can be repeated to yourself or written down in a journal each day in order to begin to change negative self-talk into positive self-talk. The more good things you begin to believe you deserve or see about yourself, the more likely you can overcome low-self-esteem and feel motivated to take the steps necessary to achieve your dreams and create your best life.

Some Positive Statements to Improve Self-talk

Some examples of positive affirmations that can be repeated daily to improve self-talk are:

  • “I am worthy!”
  • “I can do anything I put my mind to!”
  • “I am good enough!”
  • “Each day I am improving!”
  • “Each day I can do more!”

Make up your own affirmations by creating an opposite statement to your negative statement. Begin to train your negative thinking mind to think positively through the simple but powerful tool of affirmations and kick low self-esteem to the curb.

Find Support by Getting Connected

Connecting with positive people can be another way to improve our internal view of our self. If the people around you support your dreams and believe in you, it becomes easier to believe in yourself. If your family and friends are not able to fill this role, seek out like-minded people in business and groups to help motivate, challenge and inspire you.

Giving Back to the Community (or Online Community)

The power of giving back can provide fuel for worthiness in ourselves. If you like pets, you can volunteer at a local shelter or humane society. If you like kids, you can work as a reading tutor or in an afterschool program. If you like the elderly, visit a nursing home and spend time with the many people there who would love and enjoy the company. If you feel called to it, you can offer your help to clean up parks and waterways or volunteer at events that interest you. Giving back to the community can create feelings of goodness and worthiness in yourself that you can use to help you build the best life of your dreams. There are hundreds of ways to help others and give back. Help in ways that makes your soul sing! As you make a difference in others’ lives, your self-esteem will build, and you may end up making some wonderful new, like-minded friends in the process.
